“Le Crépuscule des Pharaons” at the Musée Jacquemart-André

Paris, 29 February 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA).

The Musée Jacquemart-André is to present an exhibition titled “Le Crépuscule des Pharaons” (Twilight of the Pharaohs), from 23 March to 23 July 2012.

The exhibition will present more than one hundred pieces borrowed from international collections of Egyptian antiquities including that of the british Museum, the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, and the Ägyptisches Museum in Berlin amongst others. Olivier Perdu, Egyptologist at the collège de France, and Nicolas Sainte Fare Garnot, curator at the Musée Jacquemart-André, are to be the head curators of the exhibition.

The exhibition follows a themed layout which puts the Pharaoh in the place of honour. In the first room, different representations of the Pharaoh – the central figure in ancient Egyptian art – are presented. Further on, representations of the Egyptian pantheon dominate the display, with three rooms entirely dedicated to altars, bronze vases, stelae, jewellery and ushabti which were used to decorate tombs. A tomb has also been entirely recreated, complete with furniture.

The theme of the exhibition features a compelling mixture of the elegance, delicacy, and sobriety typical of ancient Egyptian art.
