Grand Egyptian Museum to be opened in 2015

Egypt's Antiquities Ministry has announced that the Grand Egyptian Museum will be opened in 2015 on the Cairo-Alexandria Road near the famous Giza Pyramids.

The building is in its final construction phase after a delay caused by the 2011 revolution in the North African country after which former Egyptian archeologist and antiquities minister Zahi Hawass lost his job in a Cabinet reshuffle aimed at easing pressure from protesters seeking to purge remnants of the Mubarak regime.

The new museum, also known as the Giza Museum, is described as the largest archaeological museum in the world and will house artifacts of ancient Egypt.

The USD 550 million museum is shaped like a chamfered triangle and spans 50 hectares of land approximately two kilometers west of Giza pyramids.

One of the main features of the museum is the translucent alabaster stonewall that makes up the front facade of the building.
